What’s the Hype? Marvel’s Doctor Is In
With alternate universes and an infinite number of realities, there is no doubt that the world needed a hero with more knowledge and power than the Avengers or the neighborhood friendly Defenders. We’ve seen magic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Thor and Loki but we haven’t seen magic like the mystic arts until Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange was a distinguished neurosurgeon, until he got into a car accident that ruined his career and threw him into a pit of depression and economic crisis. His accident is what thwarted him from helping people’s lives…or so he thought.
A very broke and curious Doctor spent the last of his fortune to go eastwards to seek the Ancient One, who was thought to just be a rumor. Strange wanted one thing and begged for the nerves in his hands to be healed so he could go back to saving lives. The Ancient One informed Strange that “there is more than one way to save lives.” Doctor Strange’s curiosity and ambition compelled him to learn the ways of the mystic arts in order to save the world through his magic. It is unclear exactly which comic storyline is going to be followed in Marvel’s movie.
In the new movie, which came out in theaters November 4, Doctor Strange is played by celebrated actor Benedict Cumberbatch, and the illain in the movie is played by Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen. Mads’ character is also a sorcerer like Doctor Strange, but he plans to collide all of the world’s dimensions together into one, causing catastrophic results. Insert Doctor Strange to save the day in a way Captain America or Iron Man never could.
If you have not yet heard about the movie, just look for the Doctor Strange commercials that seem to be everywhere. T-shirts, magnets, stickers, and posters are sold in many stores. One comic shop is even selling Doctor Strange cut-outs! The question is, is Marvel’s mystic man worth the hype? With a story containing collapsing universes, the paranormal, unexplainable magic, colliding realities, and a super mystical being who can control the world from caving in on itself, audiences owe it to themselves to find out.
