Studies show that 7.3 million Americans are vegetarian and 1 million people of that population are vegan. The number of meat eaters is growing smaller and smaller every year. Yet still many people do not know the difference between vegetarianism and veganism.
The most popular reason for switching to a no ¬meat based diet is to save the animals. Many people believe the tactics used to kill animals are morbid, and that they have feelings just like humans do. Some religions call for no eating of certain animals. The followers may choose not to eat any meat at all. Other reasons include health issues. Red meat is known to affect your health and may cause cancer in some cases.
Vegetarianism is the practice of no meat eating. These people however, do eat animal products such as eggs and milk. Their reasoning is, the method to get eggs and milk do not harm the animals. Vegans do not eat meat or any animal products. Some of them do not even wear animal products such as: leather, fur, silk, or wool. Pescetarians are people who eat fish but no other type of meat.
Vegetarianism and Veganism are becoming more and more popular in the American life. It is important to know the difference and understand and respect people’s lifestyle.
