Tips for Expressing Yourself Through Writing
By Jelena M. and Teagan N.
Whether it is poetry, stories, or blogging about daily life, writing can help anyone to relieve any feelings they have. These are a collection of tips from us, fellow writers, to hopefully help anyone out with their daily emotions.
In poetry, you can take in how you are feeling right then, and put that feeling into a metaphor. For example, if you are feeling trapped, you could say that “life has swallowed up the key to your happiness.”
In a story, you can kill someone and it is okay. If you do this in real life, it is not okay. The ability to write and not have any consequences is one of the best parts of writing. It can help if you want to slap, punch, or even kill someone.
When you write (anything, such as a short story, novel, or poem) you can express emotions perhaps easier than when you talk. With some people, it is effortless to bluntly state feelings, but for others it is easier to write in a stranger’s point of view for specific situations.
Whenever you are feeling a certain way, you can put that feeling into your character.
You may want to share your emotions with others, which is one of the reasons why writing can help. You can write your feelings in whichever form and share it with family, friends, strangers, or even just save it for yourself.
If you are used to suppressing your emotions, writing can be a healthy way of releasing yourself without getting hurt by whatever causes you to hold back your feelings.
Different stories need different types of writing. Some stories need to be written by hand on notebook paper, others typed up on a chosen word processing program. Don’t be afraid to write in a notebook if that is where you feel your story should be written.
If you write stories or how you feel online, you can make it private or public. If you would like to have your writing public, and not be recognizable, you can make an anonymous blog.
NEVER suppress your feelings, instead, write about them!
Write about anything you would like to. Maybe one day in the future, you will look back on it, and remember what you don’t currently want to forget.
If you want to write publicly, but you have something personal which you don’t want published, then save it in a journal, an online storage like Dropbox, or write it in a blog post. Don’t forget to save the writing as a draft.
ALWAYS carry a notebook and a pencil or pen with you. You never know if you will see or experience something you will want to jot down. NEVER wait until later onto write how you feel!
When writing, use personification if you don’t want to express exactly what you are talking about. For instance, Mom won’t quit criticizing you? Well, Mom is a shadow now. Another example is if a girl at school is being snotty and acting like a jerk. The girl is a Siamese cat now.
Imagine it! (a poem)
The shadow chases after me, its growl shaking the floor beneath me.
I see my friends.
They look worried.
Why?
Because they can’t see the shadow.
But I can.
I run away, through the trees and try to find shelter.
But, it’s there.
Its darkness towers over me,
paralyzing me.
I am now its prey.
Remember to never be afraid to express yourself!
