The Success of the YouTuber
By Madison E.
YouTube’s influence over pop culture has changed the game for many young entrepreneurs and Internet sensations.
YouTube’s brand has sparked the success of many Internet stars such as Hannah Hart, Shane Dawson and Felix Kjellberg. The brand and the influence it has over pop culture have catapulted other stars into fame and fortune.
Hannah Hart’s channel, MyHarto, has more than 1.8 million subscribers. The success of her weekly cooking series has led to the recent release of cookbook. But her achievement does not stop there. Hannah Hart, alongside another YouTube star Grace Helbig, will be staring in the reboot of the 1970’s series “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl.” Hart expressed her gratitude and the news of her casting in one of her videos stating, “We are so excited to announce that we’re going to be Legendary’s first female superheroes.” Hart has also starred in the digital film “Camp Takota”.
Shane Dawson has experience similar success like that of Hannah Hart. Both of his YouTube channels, shane and Shane Dawson TV, have a combined 13.4 million subscribers making him one of the most subscribed YouTubers. Dawson presented ideas of TV series to NBC, one of which was accepted, but never made into a series. He also starred in the Starz reality-competition called “The Chair”. Dawson and another filmmaker were pitted against each other in creating two different movies. Each filmmaker was created using the same screenplays and the same budget. Dawson’s movie “Not Cool” won the competition. The YouTube star has recently expanded his portfolio, adding author to the list. His book “I Hate My Selfie” goes on sale March 10th.
YouTube’s success in creating stars has continued as other notable YouTubers have stepped into the spotlight. Felix Kjellberg, otherwise known as “PewDiePie” has become the most popular YouTuber in history with over 34.9 million subscribers. He has influenced the world of gaming and consequently influenced the sales of many videogames such as “Goat Simulator” and “Slender Man.” The Wall Street journal estimated that PewDiePie has earned “$4 million via ad revenues annually.”
The Internet today has an increasingly large influence over the world of pop culture and trends. The recent success of YouTubers like Hannah Hart, Shane Dawson, and Felix Kjellberg is just the beginning of change in the pop culture, book, and movie industries.
