What is Armed Forces Day Again?
By Nora L.
Armed Forces Day is a day to honor the men and women who have, and are, currently fighting for our country. It includes all of the different Armed Forces which are the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Army, the Air Force, and the National Guard. Each year, a new “theme” for Armed Forces day is chosen. The first time that Armed Forces Day was celebrated, was May 20th, 1950. The theme was “Teamed for Defense.” This was meant to signify the unity, of all the military forces under one government. Armed Forces Day is not just a day to say, “Yay! These are men and women serving our country,” but to show us what their lives look like, what they’re doing in their role to our country, and what impact they are making on the world as we know it.
The Marine Corps work as one of the most elite task forces. They are a department of the Navy, and serve closely with them. They serve to protect naval bases, guard U.S. embassies, and provide some of the quickest forces to protect the U.S. anywhere in the world. The United States Army is prepared and ready to protect the U.S. on land, whether that means preserving the peace and security of our country or supporting and making national policies and objectives.
The Navy serves the U.S. on ship, out on the waters. The U.S. Air Force’s mission is to fly, fight, and win in the air!
The National Guard is a reserve for the military. Training and preparing men and women to serve on the front-lines if needed and if they are not needed they complete the work for military on the home-front. As you can see, all of the task forces of the United States work together to protect, preserve, and keep our country a safe place. They do so much for us, and Armed Forces Day is just a small commemoration of all their courage, bravery, and service to our country.
“Armed Forces Day, what’s the big deal?”
The big deal is that these men and women are putting their life on the line, to protect and fight for our country! They are doing their duty to America, and through Armed Forces Day, we honor their courage, their strength, and their lives. Whether they are active in duty or veterans, whether they were injured or uninjured, and no matter their race, color, or religion, we will stand and honor the men and women fighting for our country.
